REVERSE OSMOSIS FROTTAGES
Each Photointarsia image has a recognizable face and an abstract pattern underlying that face. The geometry in each image is revealed in the "Reverse Osmosis" frottage drawings.
Once the front of the Photointarsia has been completed, Jane consolidates the surface with Frisket and painstakingly removes the adhesive that has temporarily held the hundreds of pieces of photographs together. At this stage, the back is exposed, emphasizing the abstract pattern of the hundreds of shards of photographs that make up the photointarsia image. This is what makes the "Reverse Osmosis" frottage drawings possible.
A sheet of lightweight paper, usually Rives cotton rag, is positioned over the photointarsia. Jane uses a combination of media in the limited series of drawings made from the photointarsia. Each drawing takes a minimum of a week to produce, and only a few are possible as the ridges from the pressure of the knife blade are gradually reduced over the course of rubbing with graphite, conté crayon, oil pastel, and even gold leaf, all of which Jane has used in the frottages.
The original drawings are available for purchase. Limited edition pigment prints on archival cotton papers are also available for some of the Reverse Osmosis Frottage drawings.
